Fix Ignition Switch Problems
In an older car, ignition switch problems can often make you think that you have serious car trouble. When the unit doesn't work, it's obvious that your vehicle won't start. The equipment is the device that triggers your automobile engine to start. This car part can't be ignored. If you start having trouble getting the car to start smoothly, you need to do the trouble shooting or repair work to find out why and fix the problem. For a standard unit that is working properly, the lock cylinder inside the car is where you insert a car key and turn the key. The other part that must work correctly is the electronic switch. The job of a switch, simply, is to turn on the auto engine by using an electric relay mechanism to push another gear that pushes the fly wheel. The On and Off positions are self explanatory, while the Lock setting requires that your key be in a specific position to be removed. A malfunction of either the locking cylinder or the electrical portion can keep your vehicle from starting properly.
Obviously, if your car doesn't start when you turn the lock cylinder, it could be caused by a bad ignition switch. The difficulty with this philosophy is that a car may not start due to other problems. For example, you might have a starter that has given up. The car battery may be dead. You should start troubleshooting a bad ignition by first eliminating other potential causes.
If you check the car battery with a voltmeter and it is working, then you can move to the review of the ignition device. Try turning the key to the On position and look for the warning light on the dashboard to activate. If they turn on, but don't shut off when you move the key to the Start position, it is probably a problem with the switch. this is a case where you need to switch ignition parts out.
If the problem with the vehicle is the switch, there is only one best way to solve the problem. You should replace the entire switch. There are several issues that can arise in the internal workings of the device, so you should just pull the old unit and have a new one installed.
Replacing the unit is not as difficult as you might expect. You disconnect the battery's negative terminal, remove the steering wheel column covers and the steering wheel itself. You should also disconnect the car horn and remove the wiper switches and turn signals and their wiring mechanisms. You then remove the device mounting screws and wiring. To complete the task, reverse the procedure, replacing the old cylinder with the new.
If you are less mechanically inclined, you can take your vehicle to a repair facility where the ignition switch problems can be resolved. The process doesn't require much time to replace the device. The cost is usually minimal.
